Aurizon - stop Adani!

Adani plans to transport the coal from its proposed Carmichael coal mine in the Galilee Basin to Abbot Point coal port by rail.

To do this it will need to build an approximately 200km line that would connect with the existing Queensland rail network owned by Aurizon.

Adani now needs Aurizon, which operates the Queensland rail network, to negotiate access and the funding of any necessary upgrades and to transport Adani's coal. Aurizon can help stop Adani by limiting its assistance to only what is legally required and refusing to haul Adani's coal.

I am writing to insist Aurizon: 1. denies Adani any support for the proposed rail line connecting the Carmichael coal mine with the Queensland rail network beyond what is legally necessary, and 2. announces publicly that it refuses to do the coal haulage for Adani, like Genesee and Wyoming has recently done. Aurizon is well aware of the environmental, social, economic and reputational risks associated with Adani’s proposed Carmichael coal mine. You have studied this project carefully when attempting to work directly with Adani and other Galilee Basin coal mine proponents. You already know it would be the largest proposed coal mine in Australia. You are familiar with the operating habits of Adani. You have felt community pressure when proposing your own rail solution to open up the Galilee Basin and understand the reputational risk that comes from assisting Adani to build the Carmichael project in any way, shape or form. Surely Aurizon understands this is not a project or company you should allow anywhere near your own operations. I also note Aurizon has begun to publish reports on sustainability and last year gave your support for the Paris Climate Agreement. As the modelling from your own sustainability report shows, meeting the Paris Agreement will place pressure on Australian coal exports and your existing clients. Adding the tens of millions of tonnes per year from Adani’s Carmichael mine is not sustainable for many of your existing clients. Moreover, we are well past the point where the coal industry could be expanded and considered consistent with meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement. I appreciate how Aurizon is grappling with the significant structural challenges this poses but the company is hardly served by increasing stranded asset risk across its client base by allowing Adani. Please respond as soon as possible to confirm: 1. Aurizon will not assist Adani to develop its proposed rail connection to haul Carmichael coal to Abbot Point or provide coal haulage services for this coal, and 2.
