To the Sustainability Manager, I was very disappointed to learn that Commonwealth Bank has received fail marks on its policies regarding coal mining, coal power, extreme oil and LNG exports. These are all highly greenhouse gas intensive sectors and if you were in any way serious about your commitment two years ago to support the goal of holding global warming below two degrees, you would have introduced policies that restrict finance to these sectors. However, it seems that not only is Commonwealth Bank one of the worst in the world on fossil fuel lending policies, you were also the biggest Australian lender to fossil fuels in 2016. On top of this, CommBank remains the last bank standing in Australia when it comes to potential finance for Adani and the Carmichael coal mine. As a Commonwealth Bank customer I expect much better than this and will be looking for improvement before the year is over. Commonwealth Bank needs to catch up to its peers. I understand the bank is undertaking a review of its climate change policy and want to be clear what my expectations are for the updated policy. The policy needs to align the bank’s lending and investment activity with the ‘well below 2°C’ global warming limit. If you need any guidance on what those limitations entail, I refer you to a speech made by APRA earlier this year on managing climate risk, and a recent study from the IEA that shows how quickly fossil fuels need to be phased out to cap global warming at 1.75 degrees. Specifically, the bank should: - Categorically rule out any involvement in the Adani Carmichael coal project - Rule out support for any projects that expand the scale of the fossil fuel industry - Commit to rapidly reduce the bank’s exposure to all fossil fuels by 2030, with thermal coal exposure reduced to zero by 2020. Commonwealth Bank could now be the difference between whether or not the Carmichael mega coal mine goes ahead. A project that would not just undermine our slim chances of holding global warming below two degrees, but also threaten the local environment, human health, and to this day is resisted by traditional owners. Commonwealth Bank has a history of supporting Adani, and so far the bank has avoided the question of whether they would fund Adani’s Carmichael mega mine.
