I am writing to thank you for clarifying your position on investing in the fossil fuel industry, which I recently saw on the Market Forces website. This is a very important matter, as I am very concerned about the environmental and climate impacts of the coal, gas and oil industries. I am encouraged to see that not only are you avoiding investments that support these industries, but have taken a public position on the issue. I encourage you to continue promoting the fact that you are not investing in fossil fuels and the reasons behind your decision. Aside from the value it adds to a very important debate on this issue, I’m sure there are many others in Australia like me who want to know their money is not with an institution that finances environmentally destructive activities. I recently became aware that your bank is a major lender to the fossil fuel industry in Australia. I am writing to urge you to change your investment policies so this does not continue. The fossil fuel industry is threatening our land and water resources, the health of people living close to these industries, our wildlife and parts of our natural environment including iconic sites such as the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, the Twelve Apostles and the Pilliga Forest. Further, it is abundantly clear there is no room to expand the fossil fuel industry if we’re to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, or the Paris Agreement’s goal to limit warming to 1.5°C. The world is at a point where an urgent shift from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy is needed if we are to avoid runaway climate change. Investments in coal, oil and gas are contrary to the notion of keeping global warming to within manageable limits. These investments also represent a major economic gamble. The world has agreed to keep human-made global warming to 1.5°C. In meeting that target, the vast majority of the world’s fossil fuel reserves are unburnable and the money invested in them wasted. We need to see leadership on the many issues that we face as a result of the continuation and expansion of the fossil fuel industry. I am asking you to demonstrate that leadership by publicly acknowledging that you will divest of fossil fuel companies and projects that involve the extraction, transport and combustion of coal, oil and gas, instead focusing your energy investments only on renewables and energy efficiency. I urge you to do the economic and morally right thing and stop investing in fossil fuels. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Sincerely,

I recently visited the Market Forces website to find out what your position is on investing in the fossil fuel industry. It was surprising and disappointing to learn that you have failed to clarify your position on investing in the fossil fuel industry. How my money is invested is extremely important to me. I am concerned about the environmental and climate impacts of coal, oil and gas and want to keep my money with a bank that is not supporting the fossil fuel industry. I ask that you write to both me and Market Forces (contact@marketforces.org.au) and provide a statement in response to the following question: What is your bank's position on investing in the fossil fuel industry (coal, gas and oil)? If you do not provide a statement, I will take that as an indication that you are investing in the fossil fuel industry and therefore not a suitable candidate for my business. I understand that your bank's owners have loaned billions to the fossil fuel industry in Australia and abroad since 2016. I am writing to urge you to contact your parent company and ask that they change their lending policies so further loans are not made to the fossil fuel industry.
