I recently became aware that your bank is a major financier of the fossil fuel industry, and does not have a policy in place that prevents the financing of new or expanded fossil fuels. I am writing to urge you to change your investment policies so this does not continue.

The fossil fuel industry is threatening our land and water resources, the health of people living close to these industries, our wildlife and our natural environment, including the iconic Great Barrier Reef, the vast feeding and breeding grounds of the Lake Eyre Basin, and the pristine Scott Reef, home to dozens of endangered, vulnerable and threatened species.

Further, it is abundantly clear there is no room to expand the fossil fuel industry if we're to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, or the Paris Agreement's goal to limit warming to 1.5°C. The world is at a point where an urgent shift from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy is needed if we are to avoid runaway climate change. Investments in new or expanded coal, oil and gas are contrary to the notion of keeping global warming to within manageable limits.

These investments also represent a major economic gamble. The world has agreed to keep human-made global warming to 1.5°C. In meeting that target, the vast majority of the world's fossil fuel reserves are unburnable and the money invested in them wasted.

We need to see leadership on the many issues that we face as a result of the continuation and expansion of the fossil fuel industry. I am asking you to demonstrate that leadership by publicly acknowledging that you will divest from fossil fuel companies and projects that involve the extraction, transport and combustion of coal, oil and gas, instead focusing your energy investments only on renewables and energy efficiency.

I urge you to update your policies and lending practices to align with your claimed commitments to net-zero by 2050 and the Paris Agreement. These must:

- rule out any direct finance to any fossil fuel expansion project, and
- rule out all types of finance (project finance, corporate finance and facilitating bonds) to any company pursuing fossil fuel expansion plans.

What is your position on investing in fossil fuels?

I recently visited the Market Forces website to find out what your position is on investing in the fossil fuel industry. It was surprising and disappointing to learn that you have failed to clarify your position on investing in the fossil fuel industry.

How my money is invested is extremely important to me. I am concerned about the environmental and climate impacts of coal, oil and gas and want to keep my money with a bank that is not supporting the expansion of the fossil fuel industry.

I ask that you write to both me and Market Forces (contact@marketforces.org.au) and provide a statement in response to the following question: What is your bank's position on investing in the fossil fuel industry (coal, gas and oil)?

If you do not provide a statement, I will take that as an indication that you support investing in the fossil fuel industry and therefore not a suitable candidate for my business.

I understand that your bank's owners have loaned billions to the fossil fuel industry in Australia and abroad since 2016.

I am writing to urge you to contact your parent company and ask that they change their lending policies so further loans are not made to fossil fuel expansion projects and the companies pursuing them.
