Adani’s Carmichael coal and rail project will trash First Nations land rights, drain critical water resources from drought stricken regions, risk our already distressed Great Barrier Reef and fuel runaway global warming that threatens all our lives and livelihoods.

However, Adani’s plans require input from many project partners in the finance, insurance, engineering/construction and coal haulage areas.

Most Australians do not support this disastrous coal mine, with thousands taking action time and time again to show that every company associated with Adani faces serious reputational risk. That’s why over 100 major companies have already ruled out working with Adani. But we need to keep the pressure up because dozens of companies are still working with Adani or risk future exposure. Adani Group is also working to expand fossil fuel infrastructure beyond the Carmichael project. You can see our compilation of its activities and plans here.

Re: Adani Carmichael coal project I am very concerned about your company's activities helping Adani mine and export coal from the Galilee Basin in Queensland. I want you to confirm to me personally, and announce publicly, that you will no longer be involved in any part of this project. The proposed Carmichael coal mine poses numerous environmental risks, including the depletion of groundwater, increased particulate air pollution along the transport and shipping corridor, as well as in the region where the coal is burned, and increased industrialisation of Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area coastal boundary as a result of larger shipping volumes. The project also does not stack up economically, pushing against the tide of a declining coal sector. Most critically of all, the world is on the brink of triggering runaway climate change, and the Paris climate change agreement struck in 2015 aims to hold global warming to below 1.5˚C above preindustrial levels. Building a massive new thermal coal mine is about the clearest example of what we need to avoid if we want a stable, liveable climate. The Carmichael coal mine has become one of the most controversial projects in the world, opposed by the majority of Australians with hundreds of thousands taking action through petitions or public activities to demonstrate their opposition. Any company associated with the project will be held accountable by the community for its support of this environmentally destructive and economically reckless project. Adani itself is a company with a chequered history, most recently being convicted and fined for lying to the Queensland environmental regulator over land-clearing activities on the Carmichael mine site. Again, I urge you to confirm that your company will stop helping contribute to Adani's destructive Carmichael coal plans. I expect your prompt reply to unequivocally rule out any further involvement by your company in any part of the Adani Carmichael coal project. Sincerely,

All major projects require underwriting insurance for public liability, plant and equipment damage and workers compensation, among other things.
It is very likely that Adani still hasn’t locked in the major insurance deals it needs to construct the mine and rail line, and without insurance it cannot undertake the work.
So far, we have convinced over 35 global insurers, including some major players in the resources and energy sectors, to publicly rule out insuring any part of the Adani Carmichael project.

Over forty banks have ruled out lending to the Adani Carmichael project. Despite admitting the project will by financed by the Adani Group, the conglomerate is still looking for funds to build the coal mine and rail line.

There were only three companies in Australia that were equipped to haul Adani’s coal and Adani didn’t reach a haulage agreement with any of them.

Adani has been forced to set up its own coal haulage company, owned by Adani Ports. Adani Ports’ investors and bankers are now at risk of funding the Carmichael coal project.
