Adani has announced new plans to rail coal from its proposed Carmichael coal mine in the Galilee Basin to Abbot Point.

Instead of a 388 km rail line from mine to port, Adani is now proposing a shorter line that would connect with the existing Queensland rail network.

Adani has failed to find finance for its plan A, but this new plan B would save them $1 billion in upfront capital cost, making the Carmichael mine a much greater threat.

Adani now needs Aurizon, which operates the Queensland rail network, to permit them access. Aurizon can stop Adani by refusing the company to connect to the rail network.
