Help stop AI chatbots greenwashing JERA!

Japanese power giant JERA is being labelled by artificial intelligence (AI) tools as a renewable energy company – why? Because the company likes to claim it’s a clean energy leader. However, only 3% of its power generation capacity is renewable, while a whopping 97% is fossil fuel based.

With people increasingly relying on AI to answer their questions, it’s important that we make sure AI provides factual information on the companies making the climate crisis worse, instead of just regurgitating greenwash.

Here’s what you can do to help correct the record on JERA. We’ve provided three options – please pick the one that works best for you:

Option 1: Leave feedback on the Google search AI overview

  1. Open Google and search for “Japan renewable energy company?”
  2. Have a look at Google’s AI generated overview, if it appears. Chances are it fails to make clear the extent of JERA’s involvement in fossil fuels.AI Overview
  3. Click the thumbs down icon to leave negative feedback, then click “Report a problem”
You may need to first click “show more” to reveal the option to leave feedback.Google-Search-AI-report-a-problem-3
  4. In the feedback window, select “Not factually correct” or “Other” and enter your feedback in the “Share some details” field. To make it easier, we’ve included a pre-written message below that you can copy and paste. Please add your first name to the bottom. The more you can customise it and make it your own, the better!Google-Search-AI-report-a-problem-3

    Pre-written feedback message:

Google’s AI overview gives the impression that Japanese power company JERA is a leader in renewable energy. In reality, fossil fuels comprised 97% of JERA’s power generation capacity and renewable energy only 3% (See JERA’s 2024 integrated report). Your users need to be able to trust the new AI overview feature to provide balanced and factual information. Currently it risks perpetuating company greenwash.

  5. If you’re comfortable with doing so, take a screenshot of the feedback window before you click “Submit” and send it to us at [email protected] so we can send it on to JERA. Let’s show JERA it needs to take real action if it wants to be seen as a renewable energy leader!
  6. Click “Submit”. All done!

Option 2: Send an email to OpenAI (the company that runs ChatGPT)

Option 3: If you have an account with an AI chatbot, leave feedback on its response

If you have an account for an AI chatbot such as ChatGPT or Gemini, you may be able to leave direct feedback on a chat.

Please note the instructions below will not work if you do not have an account.

Specific instructions for leaving feedback for ChatGPT are below. We aren’t able to provide instructions for every AI chatbot out there, but if they do allow feedback the process should be similar.

Instructions for ChatGPT:

  1. Start a chat and ask “find me some Japanese renewable energy companies?”
  2. Have a look at the output. Chances are it lists JERA as one of them.
  3. Click the thumbs down symbol to indicate “Bad response”tool icon
  4. In the “Provide additional feedback” pop-up, select either “Not factually correct” or “Biased” and enter your feedback in the field provided (you might have to select “more” to find a suitable feedback option). Feel free to copy and adapt the pre-written response below.ChatGPT can sometimes give the impression that Japanese power company JERA is a leader in renewable energy.
