BHP has agreed to set Paris-aligned goals to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions

Take action: Tell BHP you’re glad the company is committed to reducing all of its greenhouse gas emissions in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement but you’ll be watching to make sure they deliver on this commitment next year…

To BHP, I am writing as one of the shareholders that joined a resolution calling on your company to set strong targets to reduce Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement. I am aware you have committed to public goals that align with the Paris Agreement and want to acknowledge this important step. Meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement will require very sharp falls in greenhouse gas emissions, and a net zero emission economy by 2050. I fully expect the goals BHP published in 2020 to be consistent with these outcomes. As much as your commitment to produce Paris-aligned goals is encouraging, the proof will be in where you set the trajectory for your emission reduction targets. I will be watching and if your goals do not meet these outcomes, will not hesitate to take further action to hold the company accountable to its own commitments. Let me also take the opportunity to point out the widening gulf between BHP’s position on climate change and that of many industry associations of which you are a paying member. I would urge BHP’s management to change its position on the shareholder resolution lodged on this matter, and immediately suspend membership of industry associations that lobby against action that would be necessary to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. So please accept my appreciation for the step forward on your own emissions, but be aware that I will follow this matter closely and expect your words to be backed up with action next year. Sincerely,
