CALL OUT Mitsubishi Corp’s climate-wrecking LNG expansion

Mitsubishi Corporation (Mitsubishi), one of the biggest trading houses in Japan, is trying to move ahead with a new LNG terminal, the Tabeer LNG project, in Pakistan. Local NGOs have raised concerns with Mitsubishi that the project threatens the local environment, communities, and livelihoods, as well as risks our safe climate future.

We need your help to deliver their voices and concerns by demanding Mitsubishi dump its Tabeer LNG project.

Dear Mr. Katsuya Nakanishi,

I understand Mitsubishi Corporation (Mitsubishi) is involved in the Tabeer LNG project through its wholly-owned affiliate company, Tabeer Energy (Private) Limited, despite the expected negative consequences on the local environment, communities, and global climate. I urge you not to renew the construction license for the project and withdraw from the project completely.

Mitsubishi has committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and by its size and presence in the market, your company has the potential to promote decarbonization, playing a key role in limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees. However, on the contrary, Mitsubishi is seeking to expand climate-wrecking projects like Tabeer LNG, which would be emitting harmful carbon pollution and processing carbon-intensive LNG to 2050 and beyond.

The recent IPCC AR6 Synthesis Report, published in March 2023, states that “greenhouse gas emission reductions this decade largely determine whether warming can be limited to 1.5°C or 2°C ”. As the biggest trading house in Japan, Mitsubishi Corporation can and must lead decarbonization by promoting renewable energies instead of locking countries such as Pakistan into polluting fossil fuels.

Given that the Tabeer LNG project threatens the local environment, communities, and our safe climate future, all while undermining your net-zero goal, we urge you not to renew its license and withdraw from this development.
