Siemens chooses Adani over a safe climate

Siemens has turned its back on the tens of thousands of people who have implored the company to walk away from the Adani Carmichael coal export project.

In a statement, Siemens CEO Joe Kaeser restated his company's support for the Adani Carmichael project, a mine that would open up a massive new thermal coal basin.

Over 60 companies have so far refused to finance or work on Adani's disastrous coal export project, which threatens the rights of traditional owners, would drain the region's groundwater, remove critical habitat for threatened bird species, result in even more industrialisation of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, and be a massive leap towards runway climate change.

Dear Mr Kaeser, I am appalled at your decision to continue working with Adani, helping to open up billions of tonnes of coal in the Galilee Basin and dragging us further away from a safe climate in the midst of a bushfire crisis. The signalling systems you plan to provide to Adani’s rail line, which would enable dirty Carmichael coal to be exported to the rest of the world, completely undermines any work Siemens is doing to reduce its carbon footprint. You are risking your company’s reputation by agreeing to help Adani open up a gigantic new coal deposit, the pollution from which we simply cannot afford to thrust upon our already suffering environment and communities. The Adani Carmichael coal mine is the most environmentally and socially contentious project in Australia's history, and the object of years-long international controversy and resistance. It would have dire consequences for the climate, with emissions from the coal burned over its lifetime equivalent to eight years of Australia’s annual greenhouse gas emissions. The fact that it would act as a gateway project, opening an entirely new thermal coal basin containing billions of tonnes of coal, makes its potential climate impact even greater. Adani’s project would increase shipping and industrial activity in the already stressed Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. And traditional owners of the land on which the mine would be dug, the Wangan and Jagalingou, continue to oppose the project. Critically, the world is on the brink of triggering runaway climate change, and the Paris climate change agreement struck in 2015 aims to hold global warming to below 1.5˚C above pre-industrial levels. If we want a safe, liveable climate, we cannot afford to build Adani’s coal mine and open up one of the largest new thermal coal basins in the world. The Adani Carmichael project poses a major reputational risk, with over 60 companies ruling out working on the project. It is opposed by the majority of Australians, with hundreds of thousands of people taking action to demonstrate their opposition.
