A tip-off from a staff member has revealed that US-based AIG is providing insurance for Adani’s preliminary works at the Carmichael coal mine site, and for Directors and Officers liability.

Adani’s insurance policies are due to expire on 30 September and, according to the tip-off, AIG’s head office has instructed its Australian branch not to renew them.

AIG was asked to confirm this information but has so far refused to comment to us, or to the media.

A recent opinion poll reveals that 79% of all New Zealanders are personally worried about climate change. The Aotearoa government is part of the Powering Past Coal Alliance, and last month its parliament tabled a landmark bill that would make the country carbon-neutral by 2050.

In response to this revelation, groups in New Zealand/Aotearoa are calling on the All Blacks rugby team to dump AIG as their sponsor for the upcoming Rugby World Cup, until AIG confirms it is no longer insuring Adani’s climate-wrecking project.

By insuring Adani, AIG is helping set off one of the biggest carbon bombs on the planet in the midst of a climate emergency. It is also helping a project which has resulted in 1,385 hectares of land being taken away from the Wangan and Jagalingou traditional owners and handed over to Adani and the forced bankruptcy of an aboriginal leader who is fighting to stop his land and culture from being destroyed.

The All Blacks, one of the most successful sporting teams on Earth, are tarnishing their reputation by associating themselves with AIG.

Fourteen major insurance companies have so far refused to insure at least one part of the catastrophic Adani Carmichael coal project. Insurance companies are increasingly abandoning thermal coal as their revenues are impacted due to worsening floods, storms, bushfires and heatwaves fueling by global warming.

We, together with over 135,000 others, are calling on AIG to come clean about its relationship with Adani, and until it does, we are calling on the All Blacks to suspend its sponsorship.

Take action. Demand all the companies currently working with Adani (including AIG) end their work on this climate-wrecking project by filling in the form below.
