Today, banking executives and staff leafing through the pages of Australia’s most widely read business newspaper, the Australian Financial Review, can’t have missed this powerful message:

Your message to NAB
Dear NAB, Having recently become aware that you are undertaking a review of your oil and gas policy, I want you to confirm to me personally, and announce publicly, that you will no longer be involved in financing projects or companies expanding the scale of the gas industry. I am appalled that despite committing in 2015 to support the climate goals of the Paris Agreement, you have continued to invest heavily in companies and projects relying on the failure of this Agreement via their pursuit to expand the gas and broader fossil fuel industry. It’s very difficult for me to distinguish what’s worse; that – since committing to support the Paris Agreement you have loaned $1 billion to new gas projects that, over their lifetimes, would enable another 2.2 billion tonnes of CO2 to be released into the atmosphere, or – you have loaned more than $1 billion to companies, many focused on gas, whose business plans rely on the failure of the Paris Agreement, or – you have backed (and remain open to backing) gas companies like Santos and Origin Energy, whose planned projects would further trash Traditional Owners rights and local communities. I am asking you to make commitments today that would be the bare minimum to carry any credibility on climate change from this point forward. I am asking you to confirm you will: – No longer finance projects that expand the scale of the fossil fuel industry, or companies seeking to expand the scale of the fossil fuel industry, – Phase out oil and gas exposure in line with 1.5°C, and; – Phase out your credit exposure to thermal coal to zero by no later than 2030, though preferably much earlier. Please confirm as soon as possible that you will meet the above three points. Sincerely,
